Help! - Smelly Septic Tank!

July 4th 2002

Question from Sandi in Langley, B.C. -----

Dear Shell,

We live in an area of Langley that sometimes has septic tank problems. Our septic tank is 10 years old. We had it pumped one year ago and everything seemed to be working fine. A few weeks ago we began to notice a gasy smell in the kitchen and laundry areas of the house. We again had the septic tank cleaned and were told the system looked fine. We have checked the field and the ground seems very firm. Since having the tank cleaned we have continued to notice the same smell. It is most noticeable in the mornings, and seems to come and go through out the day. I purchased a product called Septo-Bac at Brookswood Hardware and used this last week. It seemed to help for a few days, and then over the last two days the smell seems to have returned. I did add some more of the Septo-Bac yesterday. We are not sure what to do next. Could you recommend another product or point us in the direction of someone who might be able to help us solve this problem?

Thank you so much!!

Dear Sandi,

You may be required to run enough water to fill the tank compartments with water in order to have a proper bacteria and enzyme action taking place as well as a good flow of sewage to the septic field.

Consider using Acti-Zyme available at the Surrey HouseSmart Centre located at Unit #8 – 2320 King George Hwy and while you are at the HouseSmart Centre, ask to view one of our videos called “Septic Tanks Pure and Simple”.
