Tiling a Garden Window

Q) We have a 70"x22" garden window above our sink in the kitchen. We plan on covering it with tiles, but we noticed the surface area is covered with particle board and the nail heads are poking out. What is the best way to fill these nail head areas and what would you recommend covering the area with prior to tiling the?

A) Using a metal file, file down the nails, and then apply a Schluter Membrane over top of the particle board. The membrane, which is the orange membrane you've more than likely seen on television. Designed specifically for tile installations, the membrane serves as an uncoupling layer, waterproofing membrane, and vapor management layer that accommodates moisture from beneath the tile covering.
