Sewer Smells Coming From The Drains

Q. We have noticed a "sewer" smell in the laundry room and it seemed to happen whenever we did laundry. Our hot water tank is in a closet off the laundry room, but now it seems to be happening more frequently--even when we are not doing laundry. Do you have any suggestions what it could be before we have a plumber come out?

A. Your problem is an old age one when the weather is dry outside, you must keep your unused drains inside filled with water. The traps in floor drains (or any drains that haven't been used often) will eventually dry out. Dry traps or unused drains must have water activity or you will experience sewer odour from the septic tank or the city sewer system.
