New Concrete Pad - To Pin or Not To Pin? - July 4th 2002

Question from Marley in St. Andrews, Manitoba -----

Dear Shell,

Should a concrete pad in front of a double garage, which is attached to my house, be tied directly to the garage floor with metal dowels? My proposed contractor says the pad should be tied to the floor. I was thinking maybe the pad should be free floating. Your opinion?

Thanks,

Marley

Dear Marley,

In my experience, this project has been done both ways. How I determine whether to pin the apron slab in front is if there is a foundation and footing wall around the garage etc. If so, I would pin the slab to the foundation. If there is no foundation wall and only the 4 floor slab, I would float the apron slab.

Its Just That Easy.
