Laying ceramic tiles on a kitchen floor - May 15th 2000

Question from: Noel
St. Albert, AB

Dear Shell,

I want to put ceramic tile on my kitchen floor (approx. 250 sq.ft.). The house is an 8 year old bi-level and the unsupported ceiling/room below is well over 500 sq.ft. Do I have to be concerned with the weight of the tiles in the kitchen over the open area below?

Thanks, Noel

Dear Noel,

No support is required to carry the load of ceramic tile. You may be interested to know that you can install your tiles over the existing vinyl floor if you wish to. First wash the floor with T.S.P. to eliminate any wax residual. 2nd apply expanded diamond wire lath using 1 staples through the vinyl into the sub floor plywood. 3 rd apply thin set mortar as a scratch coat. Finally apply your ceramic tiles.

Its just that easy.
