Chipped Granite Counter Top - November 9th 2005
Q: I recently discovered that I have taken a chip out of my granite counter top. The chip is about 1/5 the size of a dime. What can be done to minimize this situation? And what measures should be taken to ensure this should not happen again?
A: Repairing granite is not a professional or a do-it-yourself project. To my knowledge a match and fill process has not been developed nor do I know if it will ever be possible. I suppose grinding is one possibility but that could distort the surface. You should maintain your granite tops with sealers and polishes available at most major Building Supply stores or Granite suppliers. You didn't say what you dropped on the counter but I can only reiterate that one must be very careful not to rest or drop heavy objects on natural rock products as they can chip and crack.
It's just that easy.
