Can I Repair a Chip In My Granite Countertop?

Q: I recently discovered that I have taken a chip out of my new granite countertop. The chip is very small and I was wondering if this can be repaired. And what can be done to protect the surface to minimize future damage.

A: Repairing granite is not a professional or a do-it-yourself project. To my knowledge a match and fill process has not been developed. I suppose grinding is one possibility but that could distort the surface. You should maintain your granite countertops with sealers and polishes available at most major Building Supply stores or Granite and Tile suppliers.

You didn't specify what you dropped on the counter but I can only reiterate that one must be very cautious not to rest or drop heavy objects on natural stone surfaces as they can chip and crack.

It's just that easy!
