Q: I live in a mobile home. The bathroom has two sinks, one is fine but the other has this really bad smell coming from the drain. I have tried numerous things to get rid of it but nothing seems to work. Do you have any idea what is causing the odour and any suggestions as to how I can get rid of it?
A: The odour is caused by the residual of soap, toothpaste shaving cream etc. forming in the trap. Remove the plumbing trap from under the sink and soak it in my Shell Busey Home cleaning formula over night, scrub with a bottlebrush, rinse well and replace. This will clean off the residual build up and take away the odour. Every time you use the sink allow the water to run for 10 – 15 seconds rinsing out the trap. Refrain from using any toxic drain cleaners. In future you can try the following formula to clean out a slow drain. Place 1/2-cup baking soda in the drain, followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar. (Do not mix together before placing in the drain) Close the drain and leave for at least 8 hours before allowing any water into the drain.
