Why Alkyd Primers Instead of Latex Primers?
September 17, 2002
Question from Lawrence in Port Coquitlam, B.C. -----
Dear Shell,
I note that you recommend alkyd primers. I realize these primers are good at blocking stains. However, I use acrylic latex primers with stain blockers and have had nothing but success with them for many years. I like them because cleanup is easy. I'm confused; is there some other reason that you continually emphasize using alkyd primers?
The main reason for using alkyd primers is to seal the natural oils into the wood fibre ie: Western Red Cedar, treated woods and Spruce etc. This ensures that no bleed through occurs. Follow up with best quality acrylic latex paint or stain.
