Can I place ceramic tile over my existing kitchen countertop?

Question from: Mike in Kimberley, BC -----
Dear Shell,
Can I place ceramic tile on my existing kitchen countertop, which has chipped on the edges? If so, what is the best way to prepare the countertop, etc?
First, give the arborite (plastic laminate) a good sanding with a 60 grit sand paper. Remove the sink and faucets. Any loose areas must be nailed down using ¾” galvanized box nails. Proceed by using a ceramic tile mastic and set the tiles on your “new” countertop.
