Cracks in the ceiling.
March 28, 2002
Question from: Marianne in
Edmonton, AB.
Dear Shell,
The ceiling in the upstairs bedrooms of our semi bungalow seems to crack in the same place all the time. The ceiling is plaster installed in the 50’s. Is there anything we can do besides repairing it every 2 years or so?
Thank you, Marianne
Dear Marianne,
The crack is caused by air leakage during the heating season carrying warm moist air up into the ceiling cavity causing expansion of the ceiling joists or bottom cord of truss system hence the crack caused from wood membrane moving. To correct you must draftproof your ceiling cavity. For more information please call Natural Resources Canada at 1-800-381-2000 and order their pamphlet dealing with Air Leakage Control. This pamphlet contains easy to follow instructions to correct your problem.
