Q. On you radio program you mentioned an attachment that can automatically turn your gas off at the meter in the event of an earthquake. We are away a lot and would be interested in installing one of these valves in the event of an emergency while we are away.
A. You are referring to a seismic gas safety valve that automatically shuts off gas service to your home in the event of an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 or greater whether you are home or not. The shaking releases a spring-loaded trigger, which then closes the valve. Since the valve can easily be shut off and reset, it also can provide safety during home repairs, while you are away on holidays, or in any other gas emergency, such as a fire or flood.
The ASSI Safe-T valve is available through Canadian Home Safety Products and must be installed by a licensed gas contractor. More information is available on our website by going to www.TheHouseSmart.com.
