ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES
March 25, 2011What Is ENERGY STAR®?
Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan's) Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) promotes the international ENERGY STAR® symbol in Canada and monitors its use. Major manufacturers and retailers of energy-efficient products, utilities and energy retailers, and interest groups from Australia to Europe recognized the benefits of ENERGY STAR to consumers and have joined in promoting the symbol.
ENERGY STAR® is the international symbol of premium energy efficiency. Products that display the ENERGY STAR symbol have been tested according to prescribed procedures and have been found to meet or exceed higher energy efficiency levels without compromising performance.
If you’re planning to replace your old clothes washer, refrigerator, freezer or dishwasher, look for models that have earned both a low EnerGuide rating and the ENERGY STAR label.
These are the most energy-efficient appliances on the market today, offering top performance and major energy and water savings all in one neat package.
The EnerGuide label: Not all appliances are created equal
When you’re buying a new appliance, look first at the appliance’s EnerGuide label, required by the Canadian government on all major appliances sold in this country.
The label will tell you two important things:
1. How much energy the appliance will consume over a year under average conditions
2. How that energy consumption compares with different models of the same appliance
The large number is the appliance’s estimated annual energy consumption, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) per year.
The bar scale below the number shows how the appliance rates against other models.
An arrow on the left side of the scale means lower operating costs and long-term savings. The arrow on this label sits in the middle of the bar, which means you could do better. (See Image)
